funding-options

General information about how Access services are funded can be found below; for more specific information, please refer to the FAQs section and select the option that best matches your personal situation.

Who normally pays?

How your care will be funded will usually depend on your personal situation.

When you are referred for home healthcare and support you will also be assessed for public assistance from one of the following sources:

  • aged care services are managed and funded in New Zealand by District Health Boards (DHBs) on behalf of the Ministry of Health
  • Disability Support Services (DSS), part of the Ministry of Health, is responsible for the planning and funding of disability support services in New Zealand
  • community nursing services (also called district nursing) are administered in New Zealand by DHBs and ACC
  • the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) provides support if you’ve been injured by helping you get back to work and everyday life as soon as possible.

NOTE: DHB's and the MOH contract the NASC's (Needs Assessment and Service Coordination Centres) to work with people to identify their support needs and inform them what support services are available. NASC's are often called "the Gateway" to Government-funded aged care and disability support services.

If you are not eligible for public assistance, there are other options, such as:

  • you can pay privately
  • you may be eligible for care to be paid for by another agency e.g. another Government department, a charity or a health foundation or society
  • if you hold private medical insurance, your insurer may pay for home-based rehabilitation services and support.
